I've had this cherry disk floating around the shop for quite some time now. I wasn't quite sure what to do with it. I finally decided to make a live edge bowl with it. The shape of the wood presented some unique challenges, which I discuss. Ultimately I used a grinder with a hollowing disc on it to remove wood that couldn't be removed by turning on the lathe. There were many cracks that needed filling as well. Together, these two "features" created a LOT of manual sanding work for me. In the end, the piece was finished with three coats of Danish oil. The third coat was sanded in with 1000 grit wet/dry sandpaper. Once cured, I rubbed it out by hand with microfine Yorkshire grit. The end product is very unique and has a warm soft surface you would expect from cherry.
