PEAK DISTRICT WALKING TOUR - Twin Peaks, Moody Skies, Panoramic Views ⛰️ South Head & Mount Famine 🌳

This quiet walking tour we're going up to South Head, closely followed by Mount Famine. As far as views go in the Peak District, I'd argue this area has some of the best! There's 360 degree countryside and some of the highest and most scenic peaks to look at, from what is a modest hike to the tops. Speaking of which, there are two of them and they're very close together, South Head being the taller (494m) with Mount Famine being the rockier viewpoint (473m). My preferred route starts from the road by the Lamb Inn, between Hayfield and Chinley. We'll be making height fairly quickly from the start, up through a couple of Gorse scattered fields and collapsed drystone walls. It quickly flattens out for a breather though! With an excellent view across the valley towards Mount Famine, above Maynestone Farm. This field seems to look great in all seasons, but the muddy sections might catch you out on the sloped bits... I can account for that :-D Following the trails takes us to a signpost that makes the route clear; up! After a short but steep slog we get to see South Head properly, with the path levelling out for another breather and some fantastic views! From this dip between the peaks, you can see some of the Peak District highlights. Kinder Scout, with Kinder Low in the forefront. Chinley Churn and Cracken Edge in the other direction. Another quick and steep powerwalk up the path takes us to the top of South Head, with more spectacular views. There are paths from this point dawdling off as far as the eye can see, and it's tempting to give them all a go. You can see much of the Edale side of Kinder plateau from here, with Woolpacks and Crowden Tower in decent (if distant) view, as well as Brown Knoll. After we've finished spinning around up here we can trot back down the way we came and head up the opposite path. Not as steep this time but the views are just as good! A short wander gets us to the more rocky edge of Mount Famine, with the views up to Kinder and the slopes and cloughs beneath being a highlight at this angle. We'll do a quick walk around the rocks here and then once again, head back the way we came. Once we're back on the flat bridleway, we can follow that west, then north-west until we eventually meet the offshoot that takes us back to the road, to end our walk.
