RUSSIA: MOSCOW: ARGENTINE PRESIDENT CARLOS MENEM VISIT

(25 Jun 1998) Natural Sound The Argentine President Carlos Menem has begun his first visit to Russia, hoping to increase trade and co-operation between the two countries into the next century. As well as meeting President Boris Yeltsin, Menem is due to hold talks with Prime Minister Sergei Kiryenko, the Mayor of Moscow, Yuri Luzhkov and Alexei II, Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was President Carlos Menem's first port of call in the Russian capital on Thursday morning. Like other leaders before him, he laid a wreath to remember the country's war dead. Menem is accompanied on his visit to Moscow by a delegation of Argentine businessmen. They are expected to discuss investments in the agriculture and energy sectors, as well as trade between Russia and Argentina. Officials from the two countries are set to sign an agreement on fighting crime, including drug trafficking. Russia and Argentina hope to boost bilateral trade from about U-S 225 (m) million dollars in 1997 to U-S three (b) billion dollars. After meeting President Boris Yeltsin, Menem went on open a new exhibition of Argentine silver in the Kremlin's armoury museum. He is due to wrap up his visit to Moscow on Saturday. He will fly to St Petersburg and then go on to Ukraine followed by a visit to Armenia on June 30th.
