Anyone who learns FACS from me knows I put a lot of emphasis on understanding how different AUs affect the cheeks or what we call in more scientific anatomical terms, “the infraorbital triangle.” When things like the position of the lip corners can be influenced by several different factors (e.g., general shape of the mouth, combinations of AUs that work in opposing direction, like 12+15) knowing how various AUs affect the cheeks can be incredibly informative for deciphering which AUs have acted. In this brief 5 min video, I describe how four AUs affect the cheeks differently: One upper face AU, AU6, and three lower face AUs: 12, 13, and 14 This is important for several audiences who might be interested in FACS: students who want to improve their FACS coding, those who are trying to render authentic looking digital human faces using FACS-based approaches, and those who read nonverbal behavior and FACS to improve their nuanced abilities at detecting, subtle action.
