Evolutionary Function of Facial Expressions — FACS Facts with Erika Rosenberg, Ph.D.

Why do certain facial expressions look as they do? Why do we wrinkle our noses in disgust? Or lower our brows and tense our eyelids when angry? In his classic 1872 book, The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals, Charles Darwin posited that the form of the expressions on our face had certain functions that served us well in our ancestral past. In this brief video, I review his proposition, which was largely ignored in psychology and science generally for over 100 years. I share some examples and then describe some clever 21st Century research that actually addressed this issue of the functionality of certain facial actions, harkening back to Darwin’s 19th Century radical idea.
