Being together: from telepresence to virtual reality Presented by Ye Pan, Associate Research Scientist at Disney Research Originally presented on February 13, 2020 Abstract: Today, in spite of advanced video conferencing, shared virtual environments, and gaming environments such as Second Life, it is still simply much more efficient to physically travel to remote location for business, scientific or family meetings—even if at a huge environmental, energetic and opportunity cost. We developed several systems will give people a real sense of physically being in a remote location with other people, and vice versa—without actually traveling. In this talk, I will first talk about my PhD work, where I have designed, built, and evaluated four situated displays, which aim to improve the teleconferencing experience. Then, I will talk about my work avatar representations within a multi-user virtual reality system and discuss the effectiveness of the use of self-avatars on social Interaction. Lastly, I will discuss how discussed the benefits and potential of collaborative MR for our future character animation toolsets.
