The beautiful village of Willaston is surrounded by countryside on The Wirral Peninsula in England. We begin our walk at Pollard’s Inn, a lovely building from the 1600’s which was once a Manor House then a farmhouse before becoming a restaurant and pub. We make our way to the village green with its impressive copper beech tree which was planted in 1935 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V. This huge tree is a beautiful sight throughout the seasons as it changes colours and since 1977, at Christmas, it becomes covered in lights. In 1966 on the last Tuesday of Christmas people would gather to sing ‘Carols on the Green’, this tradition still continues to this day. The first record of a village green at Willaston was in 1774 and the large half brick half timber Grade II listed building from the 1600’s, that sits beside it, was once the Red Lion Pub and is now a private home. On the green opposite known as ‘little green’ sits the Millstone from the old Willaston Mill. Built in 1800 it was the largest mill on The Wirral and remained working until 1915 when one of the sails broke off. It continued with an engine until the early part of the Second World War. Two time capsules have been buried below the Millstone structure, one by the residents and the other by the local school. We end our walk at the beautifully restored Hadlow Road railway station. Closed in 1956 this Grade II listed heritage railway station has been restored to have the look and feel of how it used to be. It is now on The Wirral Way footpath, a 12 mile long footpath and cycle path that was once the old Chester to West Kirby railway line.
