We visit Fort Worth in Texas, USA. The traditions of the cowboys are still alive in the historic Fort Worth Stockyards. There we experience the unique cattle drive of the Texas Longhorns and feel like we were in the Wild West! But modern Fort Worth also has a lot to offer. The Main Street Fort Worth Arts Festival is currently taking place and the city center is all about art. The Fort Worth Water Gardens are an oasis of calm in the middle of the city. And the heart of the city beats at Sundance Square and Sundance Square Plaza. Fort Worth was founded as a military base in 1849. In the years that followed, helped by the city's connection to the railroad network, Fort Worth developed into one of the largest cattle trading centers in the USA. During this time, the large slaughterhouses and stockyards were built. And Fort Worth was nicknamed "Cowtown"! From the middle of the 20th century, the importance of the Stockyards decreased as cattle were now transported by truck and business was moved elsewhere. Today, the Stockyards are a "National Historical District" and a tourist attraction with restaurants, bars and shops for western supplies such as cowboy hats and boots. In addition to the historic buildings such as the Livestock Exchange, the cattle trading center from 1902, or the Cowtown Coliseum, a rodeo hall from 1908, and the Stockyards Station, the old train station, the cattle drive is the main attraction of the Stockyards. A herd of the legendary Texas Longhorns still lives here today. This breed of cattle goes back to the animals of the Spanish conquistadors at the time of Christopher Columbus. Texas Longhorns are extremely robust and their meat is very lean. Their horns are a symbol of the Wild West and can reach a span of over 3 meters (118 inches)! Twice a day, at 11:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., the herd is driven through the streets of the Stockyards by Texas cowboys. An unforgettable sight! It is just under 5 km (3 ml) from the Stockyards to Downtown Fort Worth. As every year in April, the Main Street Fort Worth Arts Festival is taking place there, and the stalls selling art attract numerous visitors. We stroll along the stalls, past the Bass Performance Hall, until we finally reach the Fort Worth Water Gardens, an oasis in the middle of the blocks. But it wasn't always like this; in the 19th century, this was the site of the notorious red-light district of Hell's Half Acre. Today, the heart of modern Fort Worth beats at Sundance Square. From the late 1970s, as part of the urban renewal program, a pedestrian-friendly business, residential, entertainment and shopping district was created here, which now stretches over 35 blocks. In the center is the Sundance Square Plaza with its water features and a gigantic mural by Richard Haas. It shows Texas Longhorns on the Chisholm Trail, a historic route for cattle drives from Texas to Kansas. Fort Worth's rise began with cattle and cowboys in the mid-19th century! And the cowboy traditions are still alive here. In the middle of Main Street, a huge shiny cowboy hat advertises a rodeo, and people naturally wear cowboy hats and cowboy boots. But why is the area actually called "Sundance Square"? Harry Alonzo Longabaugh (1867-1908), better known as the "Sundance Kid," was a notorious American bank robber and member of Butch Cassidy's "Wild Bunch," a gang of outlaws. It is believed that he used some of his loot to visit Fort Worth's Hell's Half Acre. Naming the square after an outlaw is a reminder of Fort Worth's past as a Wild West city. Our road trip takes us even further west. The next destination are the Carlsbad Caverns! If you liked it, please like and subscribe to the channel so you don't miss anything.
