Friday the 4th of November was the Charity Day of Scottish School Meals Week 2016. For this day, school meals services across Scotland focused on giving back through raising funds for Social Bite and the World Food Programme. Schools across the country sold various baked products such as cakes and biscuits, encouraging school pupils to give to those in need. Social Bite is a chain of sandwich and coffee shop units based throughout Scotland which gives 100% of its profits to good causes, and 25% of their staff have a background in homelessness. Their customers are also able to pre-pay for meals that can be given to homeless people in that area. The World Food Programme is the largest humanitarian agency that fights hunger across the globe, and with Unilever, have pledged to supply 1 million school meals for children in need. These charities are being represented during Scottish School Meals Week not only because they support great causes to get behind, but also because with Social Bite, there’s a chance to help people who are in need at home and through the World Food Programme, they are able to help contribute to the battle to end world hunger. Both are incredibly important causes and will highlight to Scottish school pupils the importance of helping those in need. Our aim at Scottish School Meals is to provide information on the meals service across Scotland and to create a discussion about the innovative ideas that will help shape the services in the future. We will encourage healthier lifestyles through education, we organise events and activities with schools all over the country to get children and young adults more involved and we will work with businesses to bring new and healthy products into the school meals service.
