GIETHOORN Netherlands – Little Venice [Ep. 74]

Known as the Little Venice of the Netherlands, Giethoorn is a beautiful little town in the North of Holland with a whole lot of small canals running through it. In the summer it can be overrun, but in Autumn when we went it was very pleasant. There are lots of beautiful houses with thatched roofs, bridges over the canals, lovely gardens, and cute cafes and shops. You can hire a boat, or get a guided tour on a larger canal cruise. All the boats are electric so it’s a rather peaceful way to see the town. The guided tour also goes on to a small lake (Bovenwijde) which was made from an area where they used to dig peat out of. In fact, the name Giethoorn comes from the many goat horns they found in the area when first draining the marshland to create the town. It’s well worth a visit, and is about an hour from Amsterdam.
