5S is a not a STEP, but a START, in AM

5S is often used as a foundational step to AM - while it's an integral part, it's dangerous to call 5S a step. The 5S are a continuous process (which is also why I came to like their depiction as a circle instead of a list of steps), which you have to go through several times to gain deeper levels of understanding and usefulness to your organisation. In fact, many would say that 5S never stops. Autonomous Management (or Maintenance, as you prefer) may also be more cyclical than the usual step approach suggests, but there are at least clear steps to follow - step-by-step. The first and second step of AM incorporate big parts of 5S, but in fact, all steps rely on improving workplace and equipment organisation. You should, therefore, not finish 5S before starting AM, not even try to reach a modest level. In stead, pick them up in tandem. Let 5S and AM strengthen each other: AM on the equipment, 5S on the workplace around it. #continuousimprovement #5s #kaizen
