José Maurício Nunes Garcia (1767-1830) was a classical-era composer born in Brazil, making him one of the earliest classical composers born in the "new world" and not in Europe. Both of his parents were mixed race and one of the first major label recordings of any of his work was done for the CBS Black Composers Series in the mid 1970s, where Paul Freeman conducted his Requiem Mass. The original instrumentation of this is indicated as choir with organ and double bass, something that happens in French music as well usually indicating that the organ for which it was written did not have pedals; playing with the bass adds the 16' octave and it is usually a good option to just play it on an organ with a 16' pedal stop, so that is what I have done. The music is solidly Classical period with some interesting harmonies and a keen sense of drama, particularly the hammering chords on "Mortem autem crucis" (death on the Cross). He also uses some sudden dynamic changes not unlike mid-period Haydn and other "Sturm und Drang" era composers.
