Building tactical KOL lists is a great hack to help you be agile when the time comes to act strategically. Here’s how it works. A tactical KOL list defines a set of KOLs meet certain criteria for a strategic initiative and enable you or your team to act. Here are some examples to get your brain ready to start building your own tactical KOL lists: You notice more and more talk about social media from leadership then start building a list of the top digital opinion leaders in your TA You are approaching launch for a molecule with a similar mechanism of action, MOA, as a top competitor then start building a list of KOLs that have experience with the MOA and those that are skeptical of it A competitor is launching a product with a companion diagnostic then start building a list of providers that are testing and those that aren’t There are no right or wrong answers for the topic of the list or lists. It will depend on your organization’s medical strategy and business objectives. Don’t forget to frequently review your medical strategy to help define the criteria for the lists. Building Tactical KOL Lists Once the strategic direction is identified, it’s time to build the list. Good news, it’s super easy and doesn’t require anything special. If your team has a tool available, like CRM, KOL engagement tool, insights tools, etc, to create lists, use that. If not, break out the good old excel spreadsheet. When leadership asks you, “Who are all the KOLs that XYZ…?” or “Can you ask all the KOLs that think ABC for insights on this topic?”, you are ready with a list of experts to engage on the topic.
