Medical affairs folks are data hoarders. We love data (but who doesn’t really :))? We have so much data we don’t know what to do with it and are faced with the challenge of making sense of it. Start utilizing the mountain of data you are likely sitting on by asking it good questions. Here’s how you can get started. Keep the big picture / strategic outcome in mind Keep the big picture in mind when developing questions. What is the problem your organization is trying to solve (the unmet medical need) and the plan for getting there (the medical strategy)? What is the point of the work you are doing and how will it help patients? Keeping the end goal in mind results when developing questions will help develop questions that are relevant and lead to decision-grade insights. Know what you are looking for This is probably the biggest issue I see working with medical affairs teams. You can have all the data in the world but it doesn’t matter if doesn’t help you solve a problem. A great way to figure this out is by referring back to your medical strategy. What are the gaps and assumptions? What are your customer’s pain points? Knowing this will help you develop questions to enable you and your organization to create better outcomes for patients. Asking questions directly related to your medical strategy is the secret sauce to actionable insights. Conclusion Use data strategically by asking specific questions related to the medical strategy and the business objectives. The next steps are digging into your mountain of data to figure out which source(s) will help you answer the question and then turning this into actionable outcomes.
