Bhaskar Varman was one of the greatest rulers of ancient India and the most powerful king of the Varman dynasty of Kamarupa (present-day Assam). His reign in the 7th century CE is often described as the Golden Age of Kamarupa due to political expansion, cultural growth, and diplomatic achievements. Despite inheriting a kingdom threatened by powerful neighbours, he transformed Kamarupa into a strong and influential kingdom in Northeast India. One of his greatest achievements was his alliance with Emperor Harshavardhana of Kannauj. This strategic partnership helped both rulers defeat their common enemy, King Shashanka of Gauda (Bengal). Through this alliance, Bhaskar Varman emerged as a key political force in North Indian politics. He was known not only for military strength but also for diplomacy and scholarship. Bhaskar Varman maintained close relations with scholars and religious leaders. The famous Chinese traveller Xuanzang (Hiuen Tsang) visited Kamarupa during his reign and described it as a prosperous and culturally advanced kingdom with fertile lands, temples, and a strong administration. Bhaskar Varman promoted trade, agriculture, and cultural development. His kingdom had a strong naval presence in the Brahmaputra region and a well-organized army with war elephants. Under his rule, Kamarupa became economically self-sufficient and politically stable. Archaeological evidence such as Nidhanpur copper plate inscriptions and references in literary works like Harshacharita confirm his power and influence. He is remembered as a patron of learning, religion, and diplomacy. Bhaskar Varman died around 650 CE and is considered the last great ruler of the Varman dynasty. His reign marked the peak of Kamarupa’s political and cultural glory, and his legacy continues to hold an important place in the history of ancient India and Assam. #UPSC #UPSC2026 #UPSCPreparation #UPSCPrelims #UPSCMains #HistoryForUPSC #AncientIndia #IndianHistory #BhaskarVarman #Kamarupa #VarmanDynasty #EmperorHarsha #Harshavardhana #AllianceWithHarsha #NortheastHistory #AssamHistory #ArtAndCultureUPSC #UPSCGS1 #CivilServicesPreparation #FollowPMToCrackUPSC #VijaySirClasses #UPSCStrategy #IASPreparation #CompetitiveExamsIndia #StudyForUPSC Welcome to Victor Growth IAS – Your Trusted Partner in UPSC Civil Services Preparation Victor Growth IAS is a comprehensive YouTube channel dedicated to aspirants preparing for the UPSC Civil Services Examination, including IAS, IPS, IFS, and allied services.
