Tilka Manjhi (also known as Jabra Paharia) is recognized as the first Adivasi leader to sound the clarion call against British colonial rule, initiating his armed rebellion in 1784, nearly 70 years before the 1857 revolt. He led the Santhal revolt against the exploitation of land and resources by the East India Company. Key Aspects of the First Clarion Call: Background: During the 1770s-1780s, following a severe famine, the British continued to collect taxes, causing immense suffering among the tribal communities. The Rebellion: Tilka Manjhi, born in 1750, organized the tribal people of the Santhal tribe in Bhagalpur (present-day Bihar/Jharkhand) to rise against the British, local moneylenders, and landlords. The Climax: In 1784, he led a daring attack, killing the British collector, Augustus Cleveland, with a poisoned arrow. Execution: After a sustained guerrilla struggle, he was captured in 1785, tied to a horse's tail, and dragged to Bhagalpur, where he was hanged from a banyan tree.
