The event led by the Federation of University Students of Cuba was attended by the President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel wearing a t-shirt reading “Centenary anti-imperialism torch.” Marchers waved flags and banners supporting the Revolution and held thousands of torches aloft as they marched on the steps of the University of Havana. The demonstration comes at a time of heightened tensions on the island turns into a show of defiance in view of recent threats by the United States. On January 3rd, the United States carried out an operation in Caracas and arrested then-President Nicolás Maduro. Thirty-two Cuban soldiers from Maduro's personal security detail died in the operation. Venezuela is one of Cuba's main political, ideological, and commercial allies, and the attack shocked the island's population. Cuba is currently experiencing a radical tightening of US sanctions, strangling its economy to pressure for a change in its political system, and President Donald Trump has directly threatened the island. Trump stated that the island must comply with his demands for a change in the political model before it is “too late.” He even asserted on Tuesday that the island was close to collapse. The march of the torches, in memory of the National Hero José Martí, was held for the first time at midnight on January 27, 1953. The event had special meaning because it occurred during the presidency of Fulgencio Batista, who was later ousted by Fidel Castro’s Revolution.
