Northern Association of Model Engineers (NAME) Exhibition 2004, at “The Centre”, Risley, Warrington. Part 1 ;- (see below) Prescot & DMES 3 ½” gauge Britannia by Geoff Davies 3 ½” gauge Britannia by the late Maurice Dickinson, livery made from Phoenix Paints 3 ½” gauge 4-6-4 + 4-6-4 Beyer-Garratt of the South African Railways, a fully working rolling chassis by Norman Matthews, and run on air so far, with... 3 ½” gauge LMS Class 2 Ivatt 2-6-2T by Norman Matthews, behind it. 5” narrow gauge Sweet Pea by the late Eric Sherwood-Jones, owned by the late Jonathan Huddart, on a separate screw-jack type stand (belonging to Norman) Alchin Traction Engine by Bernard Swift, built on his Clark 6” metal lathe (no rack feed or gap bed) 5” gauge Maid of Kent 4-4-0 by Geoff Davies, who finished this loco in March 2004 3 ½” gauge Hunslette ‘Iona’ by Dave Houghton & Alan Cresswell 5” gauge Jinty by Roy Ellams, and... 5” gauge part built LMS Hughes / Fowler 2-6-0 ‘Crab’ by Roy Ellams Wrexham & DMES (more later) 5” gauge L & Y 2-4-2 Radial Tank 5” gauge LMS Hughes / Fowler 2-6-0 ‘Crab’ Wigan & DMES The late Norman Lowe’s Life’s Work, all assembled in one exhibition for the first time. 3 ½” gauge LMS Class 5MT. This was Norman Lowe’s first engine, started in 1948 when he was a 17 year-old apprentice Pattern Maker at Horwich Locomotive Works, and is based on the LBSC design ‘Doris’. In 1951 Norman was asked by the then Club President, C. H. Noble, to make patterns for Piston Valve cylinders, following as closely as possible the full-size practice that Norman had learned at Horwich Works. An Article in Model Engineer Magazine of June 19th 1952 details the work – the patterns still exist and are in the possession of Wigan & DMES. As a consequence of this work, the Club Scrap Books show a rash of 3 ½” gauge Piston Valve engines appearing on the track during the 1950’s. In 2001, Norman decided to refurbish the Class 5, and as can be seen he was still doing this when he died. 5” gauge L & Y ‘A’ Class loco, an 0-6-0 Tender loco with inside cylinders, and was Norman Lowe’s 8th engine, built in year 2000. This is in front of the Class 5MT. Absolutely beautiful machining, details, riveting, and backhead/cab. 3 ½” gauge 4-6-2 Great Northern Class A1. This was Norman Lowe’s second engine, started in around 1957, and finished in 1964. This choice and presentation was undoubtedly influenced by Norman’s admiration and friendship with Mr. Ted Holden of Haslingden, who was a frequent visitor to the Wigan DMES track. This loco is to the right of the Class 5. 5” gauge LNWR ‘Precursor’, 4-4-0 with inside cylinders, in the LNWR livery. This is Norman Lowe’s 7th engine, built in 1990. This is ‘Alchymist’, the full-sized original being built by the LNWR at Crewe Works in April 1905. Again, beautiful machining, paintwork, rivet detail, and backhead/cab. This loco is to the right of the 0-6-0 Tender loco. 5” gauge ‘Ajax’. This was Norman Lowe’s 3rd engine, built in 8 months and finished in 1970. He was probably influenced in choice by the fact that the Wigan Club Engine ‘President’, which was donated by members of the defunct Bolton ME Society, was an ‘Ajax’, and it was performing well on the then recently added 5” gauge track at Haigh Hall Country Park Miniature Railway. The Ajax is to the right of the 3 ½” gauge A1 Class loco. 5” gauge GWR ‘1500’ Class 0-6-0 Pannier Tank loco. This is Norman Lowe’s 4th engine, built from Works drawings, and finished in 1974. This is NOT a ‘Speedy’! It is a finely crafted loco, excellent machining and rivet detail with truly authentic appearance. This loco is to the right of ‘Ajax’. 5” gauge 2-4-2 L&Y Radial Tank. This is Norman Lowe’s 5th engine, and it won a Silver Medal at the 1981 Model Engineering Exhibition, and was the start of his long association with Don Young. Norman supplied Works drawings, and did all of the pattern work for the castings for the Don Young designs. Exquisite machining, paintwork, riveting, backhead & cab. This loco is to the far right of the stand, at the back. There are various black and white photographs featuring Norman Lowe’s engines at the Wigan DMES track, in the background, behind the Radial Tank. 5” gauge LMS Hughes/Fowler ‘Crab’ 2-6-0, this was Norman Lowe’s 6th engine, built in 1988. Exquisite in absolutely every way throughout, and utterly authentic, a masterpiece. This is on the far right of the stand, at the front, in front of the L&Y Radial Tank.
