This class is part of my language testing module on the MA in Applied linguistics and TESOL at the University of Leicester. It is assumed that you will have read Fulcher & Davidson (2007). Units A9 on Fairness, and especially B5, which is an extract from an article by Alderson and Wall on Washback. Although it is a pirate copy that infringes my intellectual and financial rights, you can download the book here: https://www.kau.edu.sa/Files/0005056/.... The field of language testing is now awash with washback studies (pun intended). But many of them add nothing to our understanding because there is no baseline data or control. They are worth reading, but also see the most important studies conducted by Wall and Horak for ETS on the washback of the TOEFL iBT. Conducting washback studies often looks like an "easy option" for an MA dissertation project, but it is far from that. Perhaps this class will give you insights into the complexity of the issues. Also look at the videos on washback and impact by Prof. Liz Hamp-Lyons and Prof. Elana Shohamy in the section entitled "Language Testing and Society". These provide different shades of analysis.
