Many people with chronic insomnia confuse fatigue and tiredness with sleepiness. In fact, even healthy sleepers use the words interchangeably! It's remarkably easy to mistake fatigue for sleepiness (I've done it myself!) however it's important to recognize the difference because if you go to bed when you are fatigued rather than sleepy, you will likely find it hard to sleep and this can perpetuate your insomnia. Sleep education is a key component of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) — the recommended first-line treatment for chronic insomnia.
