Here are five random and pretty small ways I simplified my digital life, aka five digital minimalism tips. When people hear about digital minimalism, they might think of dumb phones. And dumb phones are great tools, but I have found that I have had to get creative beyond the dumb phone switch to maintain control of my time and attention, as I am prone to excessively using other smart devices at home. Some of my creative hacks in the past have involved using older tech that is less connected or not connected to the internet, but over time I have collected a small list of random (and a little strange) digital minimalist hacks that help me either spend less time online or streamline/simplify my online experience (often so I'm less at the whim of the algorithm or AI search results). None of them really fit in their own video, so I thought why not put them together in one. And I hope you find use out of some of these :) These digital minimalist hacks involve: removing suggested videos from the homescreen on Youtube (by turning off history), sandwiching sleep with offline habits (leaving a book and a notebook next to my bed), removing AI results when searching online (tried to do this on Google, but switched to Ecosia) and my break from AI tools like ChatGPT & OpenAI, embracing silence/boredom instead of the constant input of podcasts and music (while getting ready, walking, or working out), and putting smart devices away in drawers or cabinets after use so they are less visible. All of these things have protected my time and attention to various degrees and have helped me spend less time online (or frustrated with AI tools). I mentioned at the end of the video that a subscriber had reached out to me with interest in starting an online community around the topic of digital minimalism. I told him I would look into it and now I am looking into it. If you have any suggestions about what this would be or where it would take place or if you would be interested in joining, let me know. I was thinking Substack (putting the videos into text/article format to have discussions around), or free Patreon, or maybe even Discord. I guess the idea would be to share ideas and tips and just discuss topics further. Of course, it would be another online platform calling our attention, but wanted to know what you all thought.
