Physical Literacy Series Fundamental Athletic Development – Shuffling Shuffling is a basic but essential movement skill with many applications in sport, especially in soccer. It plays a key role in defending, helping players stay balanced, react quickly, and move laterally while maintaining good positioning. While we often hear the simple cue “don’t click your heels,” effective shuffling involves much more than that. Proper shuffling requires athletes to stay low, keep a strong athletic stance, and always face the attacker. The movement should be made up of quick lateral steps, with players actively pushing off the ground to change direction efficiently. These details help players remain explosive, controlled, and ready to react. There are many ways to teach and reinforce shuffling, but Shuffle Tag is a great game-based option. In Shuffle Tag, one player is the attacker and the other is the shadow, whose job is to stay in front and mirror the attacker’s movements using only shuffle steps. This naturally reinforces correct defensive positioning and movement without over-coaching. In the video, I included a few different variations. One additional version I love—though it wasn’t shown—is having both the attacker and defender hold a ball. The attacker scores by placing their ball on a cone, while the defender uses shuffling to deny space and slow them down. This adds decision-making, competition, and extra fun. I’m excited to see what variations you come up with! Share your ideas in the comments and let’s keep building better movers through play.
