A remix of the Vellumental battle theme from Paper Mario: The Origami King. Enjoy! (Also, HANDS www. Why yes, I have whole darn human designs for the Vellumentals, too. But I got lazy and decided to just draw their hand. It is not impossible to tell whose hand is whose, however - I want to hear your guesses, going clockwise starting from the top right! Later I will reveal which hands are which.) SECRET MELODIES IN THE ORDER THAT THEY PLAY: 1. "The Royal Theme" (original leitmotif) 2. "Green Greens" from Kirby series THOUGHT PROCESS: After reading some kind words in a comment left on my remix of Scissors' theme, I was inspired to do a Vellumental remix. To be honest, the song didn't really stand out to me until I remixed it - maybe it's because I am biased towards the Legion of Stationery, and because the Vellumentals didn't seem as interesting to me. (Which is probably what it is.) Whatever the case, when I was planning out how the remix would go, I was going to try doing it in four "phases" that corresponded to each of the Vellumentals in chronological order. However, I didn't feel confident that I could successfully pull that off without causing the LMMS file to be unnecessarily large (due to the amount of instruments and soundfonts needed), so I instead went for a "fusion" of all four. I chose the instruments to fit the elements of each Vellumental: Xylophone & Pan Flute - Earth Vellumental Electric Piano & Shamisen - Water Vellumental Sitar & Cello - Fire Vellumental Crystal & Fantasy Synth - Ice Vellumental Grand Piano, Bells, Drum Set, & Synth Strings - None Humorously enough, when I went to give the exported remix a listen, I realized that I had left it completely devoid of secret melodies! While this in and of itself is not a bad thing, I wanted to AT LEAST have my original leitmotif, "The Royal Theme", in there (since it acts as my signature on a remix.) That's when I added the bells, not only to play the secret melody, but also to add emphasis to key parts of the remix. I didn't want to only have "The Royal Theme" as a secret melody, so I threw in "Green Greens" from the Kirby series for lack of a better melody. (Completely unrelated to anything, I WOULD like to do a Kirby series/Oriking crossover on the side. I think the two would mashup beautifully - Kirby series has the six Soul bosses and Oriking has the six members of the Legion of Stationery, and both of the first of those six (Drawcia and Pencils, respectively) are artists. Not only that, but one of those Souls is a lying jester of chaos... Just like a certain villain from a previous Paper Mario game.) LOCALIZATION GOSSIP AND OTHER TRIVIA: Unlike the Legion of Stationery, I didn't know that the Vellumentals even existed until I looked up a synopsis of the game on the Mario wiki (after seeing a bunch of fanart of the LoS on pixiv.) So my reaction to them is almost the same as anyone else who saw the English version of the game first wwww. The Vellumentals take their inspiration from the Four Symbols of Chinese mythology. To quote from the Mario wiki page for the Vellumentals: "The Vellumentals are somewhat based on the Four Symbols, elemental deities of Chinese mythology, at least on a visual level. The Earth Vellumental resembles the Black Tortoise, the Water Vellumental resembles the Azure Dragon, the Fire Vellumental resembles the Vermilion Bird. The only one that does not seem to be based on Chinese mythology is the Ice Vellumental, as it resembles a polar bear rather than a white tiger. Elemental-wise, however, only the Fire Vellumental's matches the Wuxing of the Symbol it's based on; the Black Tortoise's is Water, the Azure Dragon's is Wood, and the White Tiger's is Metal. There does not exist an Ice Wuxing, and the Earth Wuxing is reserved for the Yellow Dragon. In the Japanese Godai system, however, the Seiryu is water and the Genbu is earth. Byakko represents air, not ice, and the Kirin represents the void." Finally, the Japanese name for "Vellumental(s)" is just as punny as the English name! They are called カミ ("kami" in katakana.) As it is not written in kanji, it can be interpreted in one of two major ways: either as 紙 ("kami", meaning "paper") or as 神 (also "kami", meaning "god" or also "spirit"). ("Kami" can also be taken to be 髪 (meaning "hair"), although since the Vellumentals have nothing to do with hair, this is likely not the case.)
