We live in an era where cloud systems have beaten on-premise services. Most businesses have switched to the cloud infrastructure due to its advanced security and other useful features, but what about healthcare? How do they choose to protect and manage their systems? Meet Ben Waugh, the Chief Security Officer at Redox, a cloud-native medical platform for people who are building healthcare applications. Throughout his career, Ben has been helping different organizations move to the cloud, and cloud migration is the field he specializes in. Therefore, he can provide significant insights into the role of the cloud in the industries such as healthcare, the field that still abides by the traditional technology rules. Tune in to the new episode of Cloud Security Reinvented to hear Ben Waugh and Andy Ellis discuss the great role the cloud plays today, the opportunities it provides, and the importance of not forgetting the basics when trying to solve more sophisticated threats. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Guest-at-a-Glance 💡 Name: Ben Waugh 💡 What he does: Ben is the Chief Security Officer (CSO) at Redox 💡 Company: https://redox.com/ 💡 Noteworthy: Redox, a healthcare application development platform, connects hundreds of healthcare providers with thousands of applications. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Key Insights ⚡ The cloud has fostered the democratization of technology in business. Ben believes that the cloud has brought significant changes to the entire IT field, making it prevalent compared to on-premise systems. "When you think about the whole shift to cloud and the business shift to cloud, I think that smart IT and technology teams have really recognized and embraced this. They've shifted how they work with the business teams to make it safer and more supported in terms of helping them do what they ultimately want to do. The really foolish ones have resisted this change, and it's created more of a proliferation of this shadow IT problem. A shadow IT is no longer aligning a security risk register. It's just how business works." ⚡ Healthcare still abides by traditional technology rules. According to Ben, healthcare organizations are rooted in traditional infrastructure, and the reason why they think that way is quite irrelevant. "Half of the healthcare industry is very rooted in traditional infrastructure, traditional technology, traditional networks for some very good reasons, and for very bad reasons. Money systems in that traditional ecosystem and things like medical devices, hospital equipment were built years ago. They are connected to networks, but not connected with security in mind, with the ability to run on an open network or an insecure network. They were designed thinking that they would run an internal network that was debatably, especially these days, considered to be trusted and secure." ⚡ We shouldn't forget to go back to the basics. Ben believes that one must master the basics in order to solve more advanced threats and problems. Besides, he suggests reviewing them in order not to forget their importance. "I always come back to the basics, to good hygiene. I think you should be focusing on things like patching, access control, MFA, asset management, strapping, a strong inventory, and ownership because we've got this world now where it's not just IT that owns these things and it's doing this stuff. I think, if you can't get the basics right in any environment, whether it's on-prem, hybrid, or cloud, you need to be focusing on those first." 🎧 Subscribe to Cloud Security Reinvented Podcast https://orca.security/resources/podcast/ 💡 Follow Andy Ellis, Advisory CISO, Orca Security / csoandy 📱 Follow Orca Security on your favorite social media platforms: / orca-security / orcasec / lifeatorca Subscribe to Orca Security's YouTube Channel → https://tryorca.co/youtube
