The sermon today concerns the patriarch Jacob and his wrestling with an angel, all before meeting his twin brother Esau, whom Jacob had cheated out of a birthright. Jacob knew the evil he had done to his brother, and now the consequence of that act had come to face him. Jacob heard his brother was approaching him with an army of people. Jacob feared what this encounter would mean, so he sent gifts ahead of him to show a heart of contrition and desire to reconcile. While this was happening Jacob suddenly found himself in battle with an unknown individual, a man of extraordinary strength. Jacob wrestled with this man, declaring he would not let go until the man blessed him. Jacob recognized this man as someone greater than himself or anyone else, but he didn't realize just how much. The man touched Jacob's thigh, dislocating the hip, but Jacob held on and continued the fight. In the end, the man, who was the preincarnate Christ, changed Jacob's name to Israel, showing a changed character. From this story we see we should have a determination to cling to God, and not take the world's "no" for the final answer. When the world says we are hopeless, useless, and that our God doesn't exist, we should not take this for the answer. When circumstances tell us "no", that we can't succeed, and that God has failed us, we should not take this for the answer. The answer is found in God, whom our faith should hold onto throughout all our situations and circumstances. Jacob learned that his own strength, his own cunning, his own ability, could not save him. He had to depend on God, and could only cling to Him who could save and help him. The same is true for us. Let us hold onto God, and in His own good time He will bless us as He sees fit.
