Stretches and lengthens the spine and back muscles. Tones adrenal glands and kidneys. Improves digestion and circulation. Stimulates lymphatic system. Reduces stress and anxiety. NOTE: The video does not demonstrate the holding of the pose after Barbara twists and places her palm on the floor. This pose is usually held for several breaths at this point, to allow for a gentle unraveling of the spine and to get the maximum benefit from the posture. The left side is demonstrated minimally so remember to twist to the left side, following the same directions as for the right side. "Asana" is the sanskrit word for pose or position. Yoga classes consist of a progessive series of asanas that help to improve your physical, mental and even spiritual health. The word Yoga means "to join together" and it brings the body and mind together into one harmonious experience. The whole system of Yoga is built on three main structures: exercise, breathing and meditation. Regular daily practice of all three parts of this structure of Yoga produce a clear, bright mind and a strong, capable body. Numerous studies have shown the health benefits of yoga. Yoga can positively impact physical health by increasing muscle tone, flexibility and circulation as well as flushing toxins from the body, among many other benefits. In addition, the focus on breath helps to reduce stress and decrease blood pressure as well as improve energy. Through a partnership with WXPN (88.5 FM), we present to you the "Asana of the Day." Follow along here through the asanas presented in the order of a typical class. Ultimately, we will have 26 asanas for your education and enjoyment. Our highly experienced instructors, Barbara Moeller, MA, CYT, ERYT500, Director of Yoga Teach Training at the Lourdes Institute of Wholistic Studies and Michelle Carlino, BA, CYT, ERYT500, demonstate and thoroughly explain the asanans, as well as their individual health benefits.
