I love spinning mohair locks! Most of the time when people think about spinning mohair locks directly, though, they think about creating a bulky yarn. In this video, I show how to create a thinner curly yarn. If this yarn is finished as a 2-ply, even allowing extra air-space for the adorable curls, it'll be about 8-10WPI (aran/worsted weight), which is a far cry from the bulky weight that most lockspun artyarn comes out to. If you don't allow for the fluffy curls, then it comes out about 14-16WPI (between a sportweight and a fingering weight, depending on your definition). This yarn can be spun even finer. This is just how I spin it comfortably. I prefer using kid mohair locks that are 3-5" long for this technique and are about 24-26 microns. I've found this to be the most comfortable staple length. The 24-26 microns is the best for most next-to-skin wearables, possesses excellent curl structure, and creates a lovely halo with this technique. I love to use this kind of yarn for next-to-skin wearables like sweaters, fingerless gloves, and scarves. It makes an excellent accent along the edges of hat brims and shawls, too. I've used a single ply of this in a multi-stranded cabled yarn, also, to create a splash of texture. I have a wide variety of RAW, Unwashed kid mohair locks available in my shop. Please note that I'm using washed kid mohair locks in the video. I have another video showing how to wash the kid mohair locks. It's not hard. It just really takes very HOT water and Unicorn Power Scour. Please visit my shop for my selection of RAW unwashed kid mohair locks from my own purebred angora goats: https://amysticalfarm.etsy.com
