Fuzzball. It turns out Angelo wasn't alone when he travelled to Earth, but something small and fluffy made the journey with him, and now it's out of hibernation. Thankfully, this creature is perfectly friendly and completely harmless - just as long as you never feed it. Meanwhile, Philippa's coming to stay while her mother is in hospital. This episode was first shown on Thursday, 26th October, 1989. I think many of us are familiar with this one as it was shown as part of the CITV channel's Old Skool Weekend back in 2013. But wait! That repeat had the altered theme tune and added laugh track; this upload, on the other hand, is a recording of the original 80s broadcast, even complete with continuity featuring Jerry Foulkes and Scally. It's quite interesting comparing the versions and seeing how the tone differs at times. As for the story itself, it's a very solid concept that could easily be used for a grizzly horror film, but it serves us just as well as a fun comedy. That's not to say that there are no moments of peril, and Rita talking on the phone to Philippa's mum while being under the impression that Philippa's been eaten by Fuzzball is played very well indeed. I doubt I'd have picked up on the anguish at the time as I'd have been too busy laughing at (a) no she hasn't, and (b) what a cartoonishly stupid way to go if she had, but it's moments like these that elevate the best from the rest. That said, by all accounts there were always mini-battles going on behind the scenes to improve what was on the page into something better on the screen. To that end, quite often multiple layers of convolution got added, much to the frustration of the writers. A case in point here is that, originally, the concept was just that once a fuzzball starts eating, it doesn't stop. Simple, basic, straightforward. Can't go wrong with that. For some reason, though, others decided that it should first eat patterned things, and then move on to colourful things, and then, and then, and then... But what was the point of those extra details? They don't add anything and there's no pay-off, just added confusion and analysis 36+ years on. Never mind, though. All in all, this is an excellent episode - funny, farcical, horrific, gruesome. I also really enjoyed the extra gag at the end after it seemed that everything had been neatly resolved, and it makes me wonder whether the episode title should really have been The Fuss with Fuzzballs or something along those lines. You either know or you don't. Huge thanks to Lee for providing this episode (If you're a copyright holder and have any objections, please feel free to contact me.
