“Who is Jesus to you?” That question echoes through this week’s message from Pastor Rob Valencia-Aiken at Kauai Christian Fellowship North, part of our series on the signs and wonders of Jesus. In John 5:1–15, a man who has waited thirty-eight years beside the Pool of Bethesda encounters the living, breathing, loving Jesus. Pastor Rob unpacks more than a miracle; he reveals the heart of the Miracle Worker Himself: the Savior who still steps into our brokenness today. Before opening the Word, Pastor Rob reflects on worship and how it awakens our hearts and re-centers our affection on God. “When you encounter the real, living Jesus, it’s an opportunity to give of your adoration, to ascribe to Him what’s due to Him.” He compares it to how sports fans pour out their passion when everything’s on the line, reminding us that worship is not performance but ascription: giving Jesus the glory He deserves. As he prepared this message, Pastor Rob sensed the Lord whispering: “Make sure you tell them I am alive. I want them to know Me.” That’s the heartbeat of this sermon: Jesus is alive and wants to be known. At the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem lay the Pool of Bethesda—the house of mercy. Crowds of the sick waited for a stirring in the water, hoping for healing. Into that place of desperation walks Jesus. “Do you want to be made well?” It’s a piercing question, then and now. Pastor Rob shows how Jesus invites us to be healed and enter a relationship with the Healer Himself. “Everything outside of God will leave you bankrupt. Nothing can fill the void except Christ Himself.” When Jesus speaks—“Rise, take up your bed, and walk”—His words carry life. Yet the miracle is completed in obedience: “When Jesus speaks, it’s not enough to just hear Him. He needs our obedience.” The healed man carries his mat—the symbol of his past—as testimony. The Lamb of God has entered the same gate where sacrificial lambs once passed, bringing mercy instead of ritual. But joy meets resistance: “It is the Sabbath… It is not lawful for you to carry your bed.” With compassion, Pastor Rob pauses: “To anyone who’s ever been hurt by the church, I’m sorry.” He reminds us that Jesus heals even in places religion has wounded. The Sabbath was meant for rest, not restriction. Jesus is that rest (Matthew 11:28-30). Later, Jesus finds the man again: “See, you have been made well. Sin no more.” It’s not condemnation, it’s an invitation. “He’s not saying, ‘Get out of here.’ He’s saying, ‘Let Me help you.’” This message is for you if you’ve been weary, waiting, or wounded. Meet the real Jesus—not the one painted by religion or culture, but the living Son of God who still walks into human stories with power, compassion, and rest.
