North Glen Sannox and Sail an Im | Isle of Arran, Ayrshire, Scotland

Crystal clear waterfalls, gorgeous gorges and views of the towering Arran mountains that will make you look up in awe! This is North Glen Sannox on the Isle of Arran. We also planned to hike up Sail an Im to reach the summit of Caisteal Abhail, pronounced 'Kashteel Avall', also known as The Castles. The day we walked up the glen the water in the North Sannox Burn was high and slippery to cross over, so we came back the next day for the longer hike. We sadly didn't make it to The Castles this year as we ran out of time and energy to continue. We hiked to around 680 metres, with The Castles being 859 metres, so we were almost at the last stretch to the summit. Another reason for not going further were the random gusts of wind. I was standing looking up at the steep ridge taking photos and video when suddenly the calming silence was broken with an unusual noise in the distance, getting louder as it came closer towards me. Whoosh … a strong gust of wind flipped my hat off and I watched it roll away a short distance across the rocks and heather behind me. The gust felt powerful and eery, like a message from the mountain saying don't climb me today! 🙏 We made the right decision to turn back and might try again another time.
