What is herd immunity? How do vaccines work? Why do some people choose not to get vaccinated? In this episode of Curiosities, hear from Associate Professor Jane Frawley, an expert in maternal and child health at the UTS School of Public Health. She answers these questions and more, diving into the importance of immunisation, the science behind vaccines, and how we can all help protect individuals and communities against diseases and pandemics. A former National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Early Career Fellow (2017–2021), Jane’s research initially focused on vaccine uptake in children and pregnant women. During the COVID-19 pandemic, her work expanded to explore vaccine acceptance and uptake across all age groups. Jane’s research aims to reduce vaccine-preventable disease, morbidity, and death due to poor access to vaccination or misinformation. She comes to this area of research with respect, compassion and patient listening to understand individuals and communities. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she led a team of immunisation experts, health communication specialists and clinicians to create interactive online resources, helping people make informed decisions about vaccines for themselves and their families. Now, Jane works with governments and organisations across the Western Pacific Region to improve vaccine uptake and strengthen immunisation programs. Her research covers topics like equitable vaccine access, culturally informed communication and overcoming logistical challenges. With over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters and regular media commentary, Jane continues to shape public health discussions.
