In this video, I'll show how why and how it's important to practice arpeggios ... "NOT from the root" In order to fully outline chord changes while playing jazz improvisation, it's important to have a good handle on arpeggios and scales. However, most students simply learn (then try to use) arpeggios like 1-3-5-7 and their soloing winds up sounding bland. It's normal, because while shredding on 1-3-5-7 arpeggios, the melodic tendencies (ie gravity) and lyricism is not well executed. Melodically, each note has a tendency. So, this rather lengthy vlog, I show you how to get started with "APPLIED jazz guitar arpeggios" On II-V-I, in C major, I show you how to first target the 3rd degree of G7 Then, I show you how to play 3-5-7-9 on G7 to make it sound like it's resolving to C major ... Then ... the rest is history :) The steps: -Target the 3rd of G7 -Ascending the G7 arpeggio -Resolve to C -Start from the II (Dm7) and use descending scale gravity to "reach" the 3rd of G7 -Alternatively, you can play a descending Dm7 arpeggio to reach the 4rd of G7 -Do this a lot in C major (C D E F G A B) and shred a little :) -Repeat the same process with C harmonic minor, change the notes E to Eb and A to Ab (C harmonic minor = C D Eb F G Ab) -- BONUS: learn to "spin" an octave up (learn this towards the end of the video) More free lessons: JazzGuitarLessons.net/blog Get on the Mastery program (paid): https://mastery.jazzguitarlessons.net/ Book a call with Marc (free): https://nextlevel.jazzguitarlessons.net/
