In this video, Pioneer Field Agronomist Paul Yoder discusses the benefits of applying a fungicide to your soybeans, what type of yield response you might see, and when is the best time to apply. In Pioneer on-farm trials, 83% of the time when a fungicide is applied during the R3 growth stage, there was over a 2.5 bu/A response. Applying an insecticide at the same time as a fungicide yielded a 5.3 bu/A response 93% of the time in on-farm trials, so these applications to your plan pays off come harvest. It is recommended to choose a fungicide that has both a curative and a preventative. To determine if your soybeans have reached the R3 growth stage, if your soybeans are developing pods on the first 3-4 nodes, and any of those pods are 3/16 of an inch, then your soybeans have reached the appropriate growth stage for fungicide application. If your pods are ¾ of an inch or larger, the soybeans are in the R4 growth stage and may not achieve the same yield response.
