I’ve been doing breathwork for 5+ years — altered states, breakthroughs, facilitator training — and I thought I knew exactly what I was doing… Until one night, walking home under a full moon, it felt like breathwork had broken my brain and my life. In this video, I share the story of my breathwork-induced nervous system crash — and how Polyvagal Theory, The Presence Process (Michael Brown), and simple down-regulating breaths helped me finally understand what happened and how to practise breathwork safely. If you’re getting into conscious-connected breathing, holotropic-style sessions, or any intense breathwork practice, this is the video I wish I’d seen earlier. 🌬️ In this video, you’ll learn: How my breathwork practice triggered a panic → shutdown spiral in one night What Michael Brown calls “charged emotions” – and how breathwork wakes them up A simple breakdown of Polyvagal Theory and the nervous system “ladder” (ventral, sympathetic, dorsal) Why too much intense breathwork can push you outside your window of tolerance The 3 safety pillars I use now: Safety check-in: “Do I feel safe enough to feel more right now?” Down-regulating breaths (gentle inhale, long exhale) to calm the system Everyday human connection as a real nervous system resource By the end, you’ll know how to work with breathwork in a way that doesn’t just look powerful… It actually feels safe for your body and mind. ⚠️ Safety & Contraindications (Please Read) This video shares my personal experience and what I’ve learned from breathwork training and psychology. It is not medical, psychological, or therapeutic advice. Conscious-connected breathing and other activating breathwork practices may not be suitable if you have: Cardiovascular or serious respiratory conditions Neurological issues (e.g. epilepsy) A history of psychosis, bipolar disorder, or severe mental-health crises Pregnancy, recent surgery, or other significant medical concerns Always check contraindications for your chosen breathwork style and consult your doctor or licensed mental-health professional before starting or changing any practice — especially if you have a history of trauma, anxiety, depression, or other health conditions. If you are in crisis, experiencing suicidal thoughts, or feel unsafe: Please contact your local emergency services, crisis line, or a trusted professional right away. You don’t have to do this alone. 🙏 💭 Who this video is for People exploring breathwork meditation or altered states Practitioners who’ve had a “too much” or scary experience in a session Anyone curious about how psychology, spirituality, and nervous system science fit together Viewers following The Presence Process and wanting a more trauma-informed lens If you’ve had a breathwork or meditation overwhelm moment, and it feels safe to share, I’d love to hear your experience in the comments. It helps others feel less alone. 💛 If this video helped you think differently about breathwork and safety: 👉 Please like, subscribe, and share it with a friend who’s exploring breathwork too — it really supports the channel and helps me make more videos like this.
