Dame Shirley Bassey's flesh coloured catsuit is safely at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London today, after 14 years out in the wilderness. The first review to mention the catsuit is in October of 1969, where it was worn at the Empire Room in the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. It read in part: "And the fact that she wore a flesh-coloured, skin-tight, sequinned one-piece dress pants outfit which put to glittering display every marvellous curve in her body..." In November of 1969 at the Elmwood Casino, a reviewer also mentions the catsuit. In January of 1970 Dame Shirley performed in the catsuit at the Midem festival in The Sporting Club in Monte Carlo. In February DSB performed at the Bal Pare festival in Germany, before finally being able to return to the UK from exile in April 1970 for a season at the Talk Of The Town. On the road again to Australia where the catsuit was photographed in Brisbane, and back to London for the recording of DSB's BBC TV special where the catsuit was the main feature. At the end of the year DSB taped a show wearing the catsuit for Tom Jones which screened in early 1971 - during the taping of this show DSB discovered she had cracked a rib. During this time the catsuit featured on several picture sleeve singles and was the centre fold of the Something Else album which had a gatefold construction. Then it turned up rebuilt from top to bottom for DSB's 60th birthday celebrations - the idea of DSB appearing in her birthday suit seems like the plan. The bellbottom flares were gone and the cut altered to a less exposed back view, a ton of turquoise beads were added to the catsuit and a top and skirt and new cape were created for the live events. First there was a TV special where DSB performed Slave To The Rhythm wearing the catsuit, then 1 of 2 birthday concerts that year also found DSB in this outfit, with the addition of the new skirt and short sleeved top at one point and a cape for the finale. It was 6 years later in 2003 the catsuit was part of Christies' auction of 50 of DSB's gowns for charity. It reappeared on the market at another auction in 2017 which is when the Victoria and Albert museum rescued it. It was in mint condition in 2003 and those 14 years in exile hadn't been kind, luckily the experts at the V&A were able to save this very special part of the Dame Shirley Bassey story. Now you can Look But Don't Touch at the V&A museum. The song for this edition is Look But Don't Touch from DSB's new album I Owe It All To You. Best wishes, Carl.
