A Trip to Orpington, a 3-couple set dance written by Pat Shaw in 1959, appears in Book 3 of the Pat Shaw Collection compiled and edited by Marjorie Fennessy. It has a most unusual progression, comprising two sequences of Rights & Lefts with hands, two changes per sequence. Pat was specific about the stepping, asking for a double step (skip change) for the ½ figure 8s and the heys and a dance walk everywhere else. In this video taken at the 2016 Boston Playford Ball, the dancers ended the final R&Ls with a polite turn and in the transition from right-hands across to left-hands across they experimented with a turn out to the left out of the right hand star to smoothly enter the next figure. For me this dance was a high point of the evening, with its good energy, fine stepping, pleasant eye contact, and utter confidence that all knew their parts throughout each round. If the dance seems like fun, no small reason why is the exuberant playing of members of Bare Necessities—Kate Barnes, Mary Lea, and Jacqueline Schwab—joined by Naomi Morse. –Paul Ross
