A breathtaking waterfront house in the heart of Auckland, Herne Bay House III offers a series of surprises. Designed by Julian Guthrie Architecture alongside Humphreys Landscaping, the home is lush and tranquil, despite its inner-city location. Created out of two adjacent lots, the breathtaking waterfront house boasts a wide frontage that directly adjoins the harbour, with two original boatsheds and direct access to a public beach. “Creating serenity, privacy and calm was central to the brief. It needed to be like an oasis, which can be enjoyed without having to worry about neighbours looking in,” says Scott Humphreys, CEO and founder of Humphreys Landscaping. “It was also important that the architecture and the landscape join together,” he adds. Approaching the breathtaking waterfront house, the garden is quite formal with lots of hedging. As one descends the staircase, the view appears and the garden changes too – formality replaced by native planting the closer one gets to the water's edge. “The garden has been done in a way to match the house – the stone that's been used for a lot of the paving is a local blue stone and up around the house the stone changes to match more of the interior, while the planting softens the home,” explains Humphreys. A focal point amid the landscaping is the glass house. Appearing as if it were always there, it ties in beautifully with the home’s architecture. The breathtaking waterfront house is spread over four levels. “Keeping the building very discreet from the road is an important strategy, in that the street side of the house is sort of the southern side, so we treated that with a stone cladding to present quite a sculptural but private facade,” says Julian Guthrie, director at Julian Guthrie Architecture. Meanwhile, the side of the house that faces the harbour is kept somewhat hidden. “When you wrap around to the northern side of the home, an extensive glass facade opens out to the view and the light, but using extensive balconies and shaving structures also softens that base of the building,” he says. “It's a delightful way to enter the home, to find these secret living spaces and entertaining areas that are around the property, both inside and outside.” Native trees and plants are preserved as much as possible. “We've maintained all the large trees … but we've also planted, particularly between the coast and the house, more native planting that suits the area. It grows well, but we've also blended that into a more formal garden – so as the garden encroaches the house, there's more exotic planting,” says Humphreys. Humphreys is most proud of the dedication to the organisation and planning of the landscaping for the breathtaking waterfront house, which took place over three years. “Coming back here, I'm very proud to say that the garden is really what we envisaged in the beginning, and it's matured beautifully,” he says. “You come here and you feel relaxed; it's a special place. You're only a few minutes out of the city but you're essentially in a resort environment, which makes you feel very peaceful,” says Guthrie. “I'm never in any hurry to leave.” 00:00 - Introduction to the Waterfront House 01:15 - Features of the Landscape Design 02:55 - Designing a Private House 03:52 - The Collaborative Process and Project Highlights For more from The Local Project: Instagram – / thelocalproject Website – https://thelocalproject.com.au/ LinkedIn – / the-local-project-publication Print Publication – https://thelocalproject.com.au/public...
