The basic taijutsu backroll should be trained solo, by lowering the body into a squatting position without allowing the shoulder line and head to come forward. When the body is in a squat, tuck the tail bone inward, and then tuck the head and shoulders inward. Keeping the arms close to the body and elbows tucked, look over one shoulder, while rolling backward over the opposite. Important here is to keep the eyes on a fixed point, this is one the key elements that makes this a martial arts technique, versus a simple backward summersault. Zanshin. Whatever shoulder you roll over, so too will that knee be on the ground and the opposite foot be on the ground. You should finish in a position of shikkou. Do not finish (in this instance), with both knees on the ground. As well, DO NOT use the hands to assist you. The second version is now based on some one else's initiative, rather than your own. In this exercise we use a fukuro shinai directed at the face. This forces you to drop straight down, without the mistake of coming forward, rolling and properly coming up into kamae, with the complete control of the body.
