Stölzel's cantata for the Annunciation from his first annual cycle, originally performed at Schloss Friedenstein, Gotha, on March 25, 1721. As with the other performances, we think this is the first time this music has been performed since the C18th. The first movement sets a text from Luke's Gospel: as the angel says to Mary 'Be not afraid'. Stölzel cleverly weaves in the chorale 'Vom Himmel hoch komm ich daher' as a counter melody, played here on the oboe d'amore. Full translation below. Many thanks to those performing: Hannah Davey (soprano); Catherine Perfect (alto); James Gilchrist (tenor); David McKee (bass); Mark Baigent (oboe); Kelly McCusker and Miranda Walton (violins); Kate Fawcett (viola); Imogen Seth-Smith (cello); Warwick Cole (organ). Sound recording by Oscar Torres; video footage by Lois Cole. 1. Dictum 0:00 Fear not! For in God's presence you have found grace. 2. Recitative 2:06 So cease your crying, And with joyful courage raise your eyes to heaven. Even Mary was comforted by this, even with all the world against her. Let fear flee away and cease your trembling: God has opened his heart to you so you may find his grace. 3. Aria 3:02 Be free from all your pain and what makes you afraid! What can harm you now? God is working for your salvation with his triumphant grace. 4. Recitative 5:20 As I was once a lost sheep, condemned to God's punishment and wrath, So I can I now graze in the sweet pastures of his grace. He draws me in to himself just as I was straying near to Hell. He breaks me free from the chains of sin Which though Satan may use to endanger me Can no longer injure my soul Because as the angel said, I have found grace, And I am now no longer afraid. 5. Aria 6:28 God's grace will always know how to sustain me However potent the devil may be Yet he can only yield, He can but retreat with fear and trembling, This is the power of faith. 6. Chorale 9:40 Rejoice, good Christians! Today is the Lord's day, And the start of our redemption Which God for his glory has planned and granted to us O God! May we triumph, And work in us that we may sing your joyful praises. Don't be afraid! For in God's presence you have found grace.
