No, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is not funding terror organizations. The Middle East Forum published a piece suggesting that the Church donated $140 million to charities that have ties to Hamas and Islamist terror organizations. But that’s woefully misleading and simply not true. The examples of “Mormon charities” they use are two non-profit organizations that, from what I can tell, are not officially part of or affiliated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. These two, independent charities are headquartered in Utah and some of the board and leadership contain members of the church, but that hardly counts as a “Mormon run” conglomerate. Second, when I looked into the actual tax documents, the vast, vast majority of the aid provided to these groups was in the form of medical supplies, not cash handouts. These non-profits are sending over things like diapers, wheelchairs, thermometers, bandages. The one instance where the official Church of Jesus Christ did donate, was to MedGlobal, a non-profit that provides humanitarian medical services. Some of the individuals involved in Medglobal suggest in their social media that they are sympathetic to Islamist ideology. But that’s hardly evidence that the entire non-profit is a terrorist front or that the Church is acting in bad faith. The reality is that it is notoriously difficult to provide genuine humanitarian relief in the Middle East that’s not connected to some kind of controversial ideology. So we should have grace towards those trying to vet worthy causes and also recognize that regardless of what side you’re on, caring for all humans in need is a Christian duty that the Church fulfills really well by operating over 3,000 humanitarian projects in 192 countries.
