Today we’ll take a brisk run through the plot of one of the most sensational and most frequently adapted novels ever written — Bram Stoker’s Dracula. We’ll look at my favorite screen version and move from horror and hilarity to a more serious investigation. Could vampirism be nothing more than a rare illness? And what truly happened to Eleanor Krumlova — the Czech countess who became the second recorded vampiress of Eastern Europe after Vlad Țepeș? Bram Stoker’s Dracula is the 1897 Gothic novel that politely saunters up to you, bares its fangs, and whispers, “You’re going to love me, darling”—and to your utter annoyance, it’s right. Let’s start with Count Dracula himself: the original tall-dark-and-creepy. He’s a walking red flag wrapped in a cape, yet somehow every time he glides onto the page, you can’t help admiring the commitment. The man has style. Sure, he’s draining Victorian England one neck at a time, but he does it with such panache you almost feel rude interrupting. Young, buttoned-up solicitor Jonathan Harker goes to Transylvania to finalize a real estate deal with a nobleman named Count Dracula, who lives in a castle so remote it makes Siberia look lively. The place has no mirrors, no daylight, and way too many wolves. He spends chapters in Dracula’s castle being the world’s politest hostage. He sees the Count crawling down a wall like a Victorian Spider-Man and basically thinks, “Hmm. That's Odd.” The man deserves a medal—or at least a hug and some chamomile tea. Meanwhile in England, Women Are Getting Paler by the Minute... Witty reviews. I hope you'll enjoy it. Here you'll find a dash of humor, a sprinkle of morals, and just the tiniest pinch of philosophy.
