For the first time since the completion of its overhaul, BR(E) A2 Class - 60532 "Blue Peter" would take on the 1-in-75 gradient of Shap Bank as it spearheaded an ill-fated 'The Lakelander', working under the Saphos Trains banner for the Locomotive Services group. The tour would begin at Llandudno Junction with BR Class 40 - D213 "Andania" at the helm, working along the North Wales Mainline through Rhyl to reach Chester, and English soil. D213 would then lead the tour north to Preston, via Warrington, where 60532 would take up the reins for the charge over Shap and on to Carlisle. From here, the original plan had been for "Blue Peter" to lead the tour along the Cumbrian Coast line back to Carnforth, for D213 to regain command for the rest of the return leg to Llandudno Junction. However, Ex-SR 'Battle of Britain' Class - 34067 "Tangmere" would soon put a spanner in the works when it caused a spate of lineside fires while working 'The Northern Belle'; one of which burned through signal cables on the Cumbrian Coast line. As such, 60532 would be ordered to stand-down for the return leg, its duties being surrendered to D213 "Andania", and the tour rerouted to work south along the West Coast Mainline. Shortly after sunrise, D213 "Andania" would disturb the peace on the north Wales coast, passing Ffynnongroyw in spirited style as it powered the tour towards Holywell. D213 would issue a tamer performance at Keckwick as it guided the tour towards Warrington. By the time that 60532 had taken up the helm, the wind had also gathered strength around Bay Horse ready for the A2s fleeting appearance, as it headed north on the West Coast Mainline. Conditions were calmer, albeit not still, at Shap Wells as the pacific attacked Shap Bank - the gentler wind doing well to ensure the exhaust didn't cling to the locomotive, but producing no favours for the shadows which it would cast. In the dying moments of the day, amid the spontaneous plan changes, D213 would catch the last rays of usable sunlight at Plumpton Head as it powered the tour south towards Penrith. 00:00 - D213 Ffynnongroyw 01:40 - D213 Keckwick 02:18 - 60532 Bay Horse 03:24 - 60532 Shap Wells 06:25 - D213 Plumpton Head All footage filmed on Saturday the 5th of April 2025.
