Dematamal Rajamaha Vihara is located in the Uva Wellassa in the Monaragala District, belonging to the Occampitiya and Buttala territories. The temple's origins date back to the 3rd century BCE. The Chief Incumbent, Most Venerable Galtamawatte Punnyananda Thero, who serves as the Adhikarana Sanganayaka (Chief Justice for the Monks) for the Uwa Wellassa District, explains the history of this monastery, which is situated in a lush, green, flat landscape spanning six acres. The monastery is surrounded by paddy fields, adding to its beauty and creating a serene atmosphere. King Mahanaga seemed to have constructed this Vihara in the 3rd BCE. King Kavantissa was the great-grandson of King Devanampiyatissa's eldest brother, Mahanaga. The second son of King Kavantissa (reigned: 2nd century BCE), Prince Saddhatissa was entrusted by his brother King Dutugamunu to oversee the construction of a vast number of paddy fields, totalling one hundred thousand. The term "Wellassa" itself means "the one hundred thousand paddy fields," reflecting the immense agricultural development attributed to Prince Saddhatissa. This development likely had profound effects on the economy and society of the region, establishing it as a centre of agricultural productivity.
