We had the San Tan trails on our "to do" list, but I hadn't intended to go that weekend. I usually do a little research and some cursory planning, but that morning we just deccided to head to the San Tan trails on a whim. Its not a very big trail system as compared to South Mountain, Browns Ranch, or the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. It's more on the order of Cave Creek or the Estrella trail system. I think the San Tan Loop is around 7.5 miles. That morning it was pretty busy. Of course it was Veterans Day Weekend, so it was probably busier than normal. There was a lot of foot traffic and even several groups of equestrians on the first little section of the trail. Everyone we met was polite and even friendly, and more than willing to allow us to pass. Definitly beter than usual. It might have just been the spirit of the holiday. I guess we'll see if we go back. Based oh the first mile of the ride and the "Green" designation of the loop, we believed we were out for a nice liesurely pedal with maybe a few interesting bits along the way. What we discovered was a truly fun trail that surpassed ou expectations. We decided to go clockwise. The first bit, maybe a mile, was wide, fairly straight, and sandy, but then once we started climbing into the hills it narrowed down into some nice single track. The climb wasn't bad and the trail was nice and windy with one last little steep section near the top. Then we crested a ridge and headed down a fast, fun, and flowy downhill section. There were lots of twiststs and turns with several little drops and a couple straight, fast sections. We got to the bottom and figured things would really mellow out again. But we were met with more than a few deep and steep ravines that would send us rocketing down one side with enough speed to almost make it back up the other. Those were just as fun as the downhill section before. The trail flattened out again to a wide straight track similar to the beginning section on the east side. About half way up the west side, the trail narrowed again and began winding up into the hills, with several steep twisting climbs. We eventually crested another high saddle and were met with great views to the west. From there, another steep, winding downhill section. But with hairpin turns and some short climbs or flat sections. So, We weren't able to go as fast as we were on the first one. After that was quite a variety of terrain, down a small valley, with some intresting sections. The trail flattened and widedned out again a little ways before rounding the north section of the loop. Further up the track, where it started to turn east, were several rocky climbs and winding ravine dives. There were a couple more climbs and ravines on the north section of the loop, but for the most part it was a wide, gradual, downhill track. The east side of the loop was wide, somewhat winding, and gradaul as well. The descent was deceptively flat as we were able to get quite a bit of speed up on the way down. We reached the parking lot, already talking about coming back and exploring some of the smaller sections that connected the east and west sides of the loop. The San Tan Loop is a great trail with a little of everything. We're definitely going back to do some more exploring.
