(10 Apr 1997) Natural Sound Clashes erupted in the West Bank city of Hebron on Thursday between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian protesters. More than 100 Palestinians threw stones, bottles and molotov cocktails near Beit Hadassah - a Jewish settler compound in the Israel-controlled downtown area. Israeli soldiers responded by firing rubber bullets at the protesters. By contrast, other parts of Hebron were quiet Thursday as Palestinians observed a general strike. Coming prepared, Palestinians continued to clash in the West Bank town of Hebron on Thursday. More than 100 Palestinians threw stones and bottles near a downtown Jewish settler compound, Beit Hadassah. Israeli soldiers fired rubber bullets to disperse the crowd and dodged Palestinian missiles, which included molotov cocktails. Palestinian police were also present, attempting to keep the rioters away from Beit Hadassah. Hebron has been the site of daily clashes since Israel's decision last month to start construction of a Jewish settlement in east Jerusalem. Palestinians want east Jerusalem to be their future capital. Riots intensified on Tuesday when two Jewish seminary students opened fire killing one Palestinian. They said an Arab had thrown a bottle of chemicals at them. Two more Palestinians were shot dead by Israeli troops in subsequent clashes. In memory of those dead Palestinians, Arabs in Hebron observed a general strike on Thursday. Shops were closed as people stayed away from work in memory of the three Palestinians killed in clashes over the past three days.
