Rannoch Moor is a large moorland located between Glencoe range and Loch Rannoch. It is speckled with lochans (ponds or small lakes) and lochs (bigger lakes) connected by ever-changing rivers. The ground is boggy and unstable. The moor was created after enormous icefield melted in this area thousands years ago. Today it is a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to number of plants and animals (especially insects) which are incredibly rare or don't exist anywhere else at all. But for us it is the view what matters the most. And it is incredible. Desolated, nearly flat moorland partially covered with water is a stark contrast to surrounding mountains of Glencoe to the north-west and Northern Trossachs to south-east. Two most famous lakes - Loch Ba and Lochan na h-Achlaise are dotted with small, picturesque islands and their shoreline is very chaotic. All this is making Rannoch Moor one of the most photographed area of Scotland. When we visited, a group of at least 10 photographers was setting up their tripods and waiting for the right moment to capture the rising sun. These two lakes mentioned earlier are popular also due to the fact that the only proper road in area was built between them, and all tourist going to Fort Williams or Glencoe are forced to pass though Rannoch Moor - which is a good thing, as for me, this place is as worthy the visit as the other two. There are two popular viewpoints - one next to Loch Ba, the other one next to Lochan na h-Achlaise. Both car parks are rather small and usually full. Going early in the morning you can sometimes see a mist rising from the moorland highlighted with the beam of rising sun - this is an unforgettable view. You can see how it looks like on the image from our 2022 compilation.
