A relaxing winter P.O.V walk from low town to high town in Bridgnorth crossing the River Severn, Bridgnorth is a historic market town in Shropshire, which is divided into High Town and Low Town by the River Severn. Its dramatic split-level layout, medieval ruins, and Victorian engineering make it one of the county’s most picturesque destinations. The earliest mention of Bridgnorth dates back to 895, when the Danes camped at “Cwatbridge”. By 1101, Robert de Belleme, Earl of Shrewsbury, founded Bridgnorth Castle on the sandstone cliffs. The castle was besieged by Henry 1st in 1102, marking Bridgnorth as a strategic stronghold. Charles 1st himself declared Bridgnorth’s outlook “the finest in all my kingdom” during the Civil War. We begin in Low Town, nestled along the banks of the River Severn. For centuries, this riverside quarter was a bustling port, with barges carrying goods up and down England’s longest river. The Severn was vital to Bridgnorth’s prosperity. We then cross the Bridge over the Severn, which links the two halves of Bridgnorth. Historically, this crossing was essential for trade and travel, and it still offers a fine vantage point to admire the river’s sweep. On the day of the walk the river was very high flood defences were being prepared nearby. We then move to explore the winding streets of low town and pause at Bishop Percy’s House on Cartway. Built in 1580 by Richard Forster, this timber-framed building survived the Great Fire of Bridgnorth in 1646. It was the birthplace of Thomas Percy, later Bishop of Dromore, who became famous for his collection Reliques of Ancient English Poetry (1765). The house is Grade I listed and stands as one of Bridgnorth’s most remarkable survivors. Next we take the steep St Mary’s Steps, one of several ancient stairways connecting Low Town to High Town. These steps were once the lifeline between the bustling port below and the castle, churches, and markets above. At the top, we pass along Castle Walk, a promenade offering sweeping views across the Severn Valley. here Charles 1st himself declared Bridgnorth’s outlook “the finest in all my kingdom”. For those less keen on steps, we stop at the Cliff Railway upper station, the railway opened in 1892, remains Britain’s steepest inland funicular, ferrying passengers between the two towns. We Continue our walk around high town until we reach St Mary Magdalene Church, designed by the celebrated architect Thomas Telford in 1792–1795. Its classical style and commanding position make it one of Bridgnorth’s most striking landmarks. We then enter the nearby Castle Gardens, where the ruins of Bridgnorth Castle stand. Built in 1101 by Robert de Belleme, the castle was largely destroyed during the Civil War in 1646. Today, the leaning tower—tilted more than the Tower of Pisa—remains a dramatic reminder of the town’s turbulent past. We then finish our walk at the Severn Valley Railway Station in High Town. Opened in 1862, this heritage line now runs steam trains through 16 miles of countryside to Kidderminster. It’s a fitting end to a walk that blends history, engineering, and timeless scenery. --- chapters --- 0:00 Starting Point 4:39 Crossing the bridge 8:48 Bishop Percys house 14:58 Along river Severn 22:56 St Marys steps 27:30 castle walk 31:25 High Station and high town walk 38:30 St Mary Magdalene Church 40:40 Castle Gardens 48:33 Severn Valley Railway About the Channel Subscribers at time of video recording: 20 Were growing slowly.
