A relaxing Autumn P.O.V walk from Coalport to Ironbridge along the River Severn, with a stop at Bedlam Furnace and crossing the free bridge. We start in the village of Coalport, a quiet village nestled in the Ironbridge Gorge. This charming riverside village steeped in industrial heritage, known for its world-famous porcelain Coalport rose to prominence in the late 18th century as a hub of ceramic production. John Rose founded the Coalport China Works in 1795, and the village quickly became renowned for producing fine porcelain that was exported globally, even gracing royal tables. Coalport also houses the Hay Inclined Plane: A marvel of engineering, this steep canal lift once transported boats between the Shropshire Canal and the River Severn. You can still see the remnants near the Shakespeare Inn We then head over the Jackfield and Coalport Memorial Bridge the historic footbridge over the River Severn, which was built in 1922 to honour local soldiers who died in World War I. It remains a poignant landmark connecting the villages of Jackfield and Coalport. Before its construction, a ferry operated at this crossing point. The bridge replaced that ferry, offering a permanent and symbolic connection between the two communities which opened 2 September 1922 Built by: Cleveland Bridge and Engineering Company costing £1,000. The Original bridge was built in just nine weeks, Over time, it required restoration, and in 2000, it was dismantled and rebuilt to preserve its legacy the rebuilt bridge features a commemorative plaques and remains a popular crossing for walkers exploring the Ironbridge Gorge. We then enter Jackfield a historic riverside village in Shropshire, famed for its tile making legacy and scenic charm within the Ironbridge Gorge. Nestled on the south bank of the River Severn, Jackfield played a vital role in the Industrial Revolution, particularly in ceramics and tile production. The Jackfield Tile Museum, housed in a restored Victorian factory, showcases the village’s rich artistic and industrial heritage. The village stretches between Ironbridge and Coalport, offering tranquil river walks, views of the Jackfield Free Bridge, and access to woodland trails. Though small, Jackfield is packed with character: remnants of old wharfs, quirky cottages, and echoes of its past as a hub for shipping coal and iron. We then pass over the lesser known free bridge which, was originally built to provide toll-free access across the Severn, The Iron bridge was still charging up until 1950. The bridge known locally as the Jackfield Bridge, was constructed in response to the limitations of the Iron Bridge, which had become increasingly impractical for modern traffic. The Free Bridge was designed to accommodate larger vehicles and free movement, reflecting the changing needs of the region’s economy and infrastructure. Built in 1909, the original Free Bridge was a steel truss structure supported by stone abutments. It was engineered to withstand the River Severn’s frequent flooding and to serve both pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Over the decades. In the early 1990s, the original structure was replaced with a modern steel bridge, We then pass along the Bedlam Furnace a hauntingly beautiful relic of the Industrial Revolution. Built in the 18th century, this blast furnace once roared with iron production. Now, it’s a moss-covered monument to innovation, tucked into the woodland like a secret. The walk then continues along the river. The sounds of birds and rustling leaves make it a peaceful stretch. Occasionally, the trail opens up to reveal sweeping views of the gorge — a reminder of nature reclaiming what industry once dominated. Finally we arrive at the Iron Bridge. Built in 1779, it was the world’s first bridge made of cast iron and remains a symbol of engineering brilliance. Crossing it feels like stepping into a time machine. The town of Ironbridge itself is lively, with cafés, museums, and plenty of spots to rest and reflect. This walk is perfect for history lovers, nature seekers, or anyone needing a breath of fresh air. It is rich in stories. Whether you start in Coalport or Ironbridge, you’ll be walking through the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. ------ chapters --- 0:00 Holy Trinity Church 6:39 Shakespeare Inn 12:58 Memoria Bridge & Hay Incline 21:08 Jackfield Village 39:36 Free Bridge 24:50 Free Bridge 45:00 Bedlam Furnace 51:10 Iron Bridge About the Channel Subscribers at time of video recording: 10 This is a Channel to show the vast and varying beauty the West Midlands A Massive thank you to any body who takes the time to subscribe and like and as always any suggestions for locations are appreciated.
