January 19, 2026. Day 3 Inca Trail Hike Today, I hiked a total distance of 17 km, crossing two more passes and discovering ancient ruins along the way. The first pass was Runquraqay, at 3,950m (13,113 ft). It was a quiet morning, allowing me to focus on the beauty of the trail. On a clear day, hikers can catch glimpses of the snow-capped Cordillera Vilcabamba, reminding me of nature’s wonders 🌍. We were lucky as the clouds ☁️ parted for a few minutes to allow a glimpse. As I made my ascent, the trail was lined with intense jungle on one side with the mountains on the other. The sounds of rustling leaves 🍃; dripping water and the odd birdsong 🐦 filled the air. Upon reaching the summit of Runquraqay, I paused for a stunning view before descending toward the second pass. There, I walked among original Incan constructions 🏛️, an impressive sight that connected me to the ancient history of the area. The second pass peaked at 3,700m (12,136 ft), offering remarkable views of the Urubamba Valley 🌄. As I descended to Phuyupatamarca, standing at about 3,650m (11,972 ft), the porters and some of my group were there. Lunch camp was setup and took the time to take in the views and the ruins known as the "town above the clouds." The mist swirling around added a mystical quality to the landscape . After lunch (about 2pm) we pushed on as the skies opens an it poured. We all found our own pace and within 20-30 mins the rain had left up to allow me to peel back the layouts and get into a rhythm of the hike. Also being careful with the weather soaked trail as there are no guide rails, just jungle. Another ruins at Intipata with views to the evening camp at Wiñay Wayna, located at 2,650m (8,694 ft). I had some extra ‘visitors’ to share the ruins with before the last 30 min push to the camp. The time spent alone on the trail brought peace, making this trek a unique and memorable experience today.
