Paul Waite joined the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company as a chorister, understudy and small part player in 1973. During his first two years he covered the Usher in Trial by Jury, the Lieutenant in The Yeomen of the Guard and Pish-Tush in The Mikado. In 1975 Waite took over the Usher in his own right and became Kenneth Sandford's first understudy appearing frequently as Private Willis, Sir Despard, Wilfred Shadbolt and Don Alhambra. Paul left the Company in 1977. Please note During the course of the edit of this interview it was realised that there had been two errors (an error, what error??!”) Firstly, Paul refers to his singing teacher as Mrs Heslop. She was actually Miss Margaret Heslop. Secondly, we both referred to the G&S For All baritone as “Richard Lawrence” - in course it should have been “Lawrence Richard”. This is part of a series of interviews and talks with former members of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company giving their memories of being on tour for 48 weeks a year. The purpose of this “not for profit” project is to ensure that personal memories of the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company are not forgotten or lost. A number of wonderful photographs have been used to illustrate the points being discussed. I give a massive thank you to all the photographers, both known and unknown. Thanks must also go to Paul himself and to Katie Barnes for sourcing some of the images.
